A 56-year-old man who was shot several times Friday died from his injuries over the weekend but his final gesture could save the lives of others, authorities said.
Clyde Gayden, of Antioch, was found mortally wounded in an alleyway on Spanos Street near Magnolia Way about 8:55 p.m. Friday, police said.
He was taken to the hospital in critical condition and was declared dead Saturday, according to the Contra Costa Coroner’s Office. Arrangements were made so that his organs could be donated.
Police have released sparse information and said there is an active investigation into Gayden’s death, the city’s first homicide of the year. Antioch recorded five slayings in 2011.
The shooting was the start of a violent weekend in the city, with four more shootings reported between then and early Sunday morning. Three people were wounded but none of the injuries appear to be life-threatening.
